Mary Gissedge married Ambrose Lipscomb 1712 (my 7th Great grandparents) Mary was born 1681 in King William, VA. Father of Mary, Richard Gissedge married Sarah Shelton 1694 in Virginia. Richard Gissedge was born 1682 in St. Pauls Parrish, Hanover, Virginia. He died 1703. Sarah Shelton was born 1675 in St. PAuls Parrish, Hanover, Virginia. Notes: Richard Gissedge's land was in Pamunkey Neck, on the east side of Cohoke Swamp, extending downward from the tract which had been patented by Ambrose Lipscomb, and which lay below the courthouse. He gained title to 2000 acres, within the Indian Ring, in June 1699, by the action of a committee appointed to settle the claims to land in Pamunkey Neck already developed [Malcolm Hart Harris, MD, OLD NEW KENT COUNTY; SOME ACCOUNT OF THE PLANTERS ETC., IN KING WILLIAM COUNTY, ST. JOHN'S PARISH, Vol. II, privately printed, West Point, VA, 1977, 671]. He previously had received a patent to 337 acres in St. Stephen's Parish of New Kent County, for the transportation of seven persons into the colony [SHELTON FAMILY GENEALOGICAL NOTES, Manuscript Collection #30057, LVA]. The will of Richard Gissedge, written 3 Mar 1702/3 and entered for probate on 20 May of the same year, no longer exists. Richard Gissedge divided his real property into four parts, but does not specify to whom it was to be left. He is more specific concerning Mr.Gissedge's personal property which was divided into three parts; one-third to his widow, Sarah, one-third to his daughter, Mary Lipscomb, wife of Ambrose Lipscomb; and one-third to his daughter, Christian Gissedge [who married a Poindexter, and one of their descendants was the Hon. George Poindexter, first delegate to Congress from the Territory of Mississippi, later a governor of the state and a U.S. Senator]. Bequests were made to his friends William Noyes, Daniel Miles, and Robert Sercey. After 1610 England Father of James, Sir Ralph Shelton 1560-1628, Knighted 1607 by James I, married 1607 to Jane West. He was Knighted at Theobald, Warwickshire in 1607. He was a member of Parliment in 1611; Minister to Spain; Secretary to the Prince of Wales; of the London Company for settlement of Virginia. Sir Ralph never came to America. He was killed at the Battle of Isel de Rhe, in the war with France, two miles off the coast near LaRochelle where the Huguenots were under seige by the French Catholics. Birth date given by Kathryn M Brown from a record in the Shelton Family Church, in the book "The Sheltons", p 31. Page 39. Page 39 says he was a member of the Second and Third London Companies. In all the Colonial records of the Second Charter granted to the London Companies, 23 May 1609, the names of Sir Ralph SHELTON of Norfolk, England, a Captain SHELTON and a James SHELTON, Gentleman, appear. The Second London Company sailed under Lord De La Ware with nine ships and 500 people. The Admiral's ship was named "Sea Venture". They landed in America in 1610 Father of Sir Ralph Shelton, Sir Ralph Shelton, Knighted by Elizabeth I. Sir Ralph SHELTON was the 23rd Lord of Shelton. He was High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1571 and was Knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Norwich, 22 Aug 1578 and Knight of the Garter. "The Sheltons Lineal Descendants from Ancient...", by Kathryn Morris Brown, p 31 says "He was the high sheriff of Norfolk in 1571 and Knight of the Garter. He was knighted Queen Elizabeth in 1578. In the Shelton family church, the tomb of ten panels on the left side of the altar is the record of his marriage to Mary WODEHOUSE and the birth of their children: Margaret, Thomas, John, Ralphe, and Edward. Sir Ralph was living in Warwickshire in the late 1500's. At the time of this death he owned Shelton Overhall in Shelton and Shelton Netherhall and diverse lands in Norfolk; Barrett in Hardwicke; Snoring 2, Magna and Parva; Thursford 2, Magna and Parva and Barret's held by the Earl of Arundel. He named son Thomas, Prother of the Tower of London, as his heir." Pages 33-8 lists three children of Sir Ralph SHELTON and Anne BARROW: Andrew, William, and Henry and lists their descendants. Sir William West, 1st Baron Delaware was Born: 1520, Sussex, England Died: 30 Dec 1595, Wherwell, Northampton, England. He was the son of Sir George West and Elizabeth Morton. He married, secondly, Anne Swift, daughter of Henry Swift. He married, firstly, Elizabeth Strange, daughter of Thomas Strange, before 1555. He died on 30 December 1595 at Wherwell, Hampshire, England. Sir William West,1st Baron Delaware and Sir Thomas West, 9th Lord la Warre were adopted. He was invested as a Knight. On 1 February 1549/50 he was disbarred by Act of Parliament from all honours,for trying to poison his uncle, 9th Lord la Warre. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Army. He fought in the Siege of St. Quintin in Picardy in July 1557. On 10 April 1563 he was restored in blood. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Sussex in 1569, jointly. He was created 1st Baron Delaware [England] on 5 February 1569/70. Father of William, Sir George West married to Elizabeth Morton Born: 1510, Offington, Sussex, England Died: 30 Dec 1538, Warbelton, Sussex, England Buried: 1538, Warbleton, Sussex, England Father: Thomas WEST (4º B. West of Oakhanger / 9º B. De La Warr) Mother: Eleanor COPLEY (B. De La Warr) Married: Elizabeth MORTON (b. 1512, Peckleton, Lincolnshire, England) (dau. of Sir Robert Morton) ABT 10 Feb 1532 George West, born in 1490-1510, was a younger son and lived an obscure life in Sussex, where he died in December 1538. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Robert Morton of Lechlade in Gloucestershire. Their son William (born 1520) inherited the family estates in 1554, and shortly after married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Strange of Chesterton (1508?-1570?) and his wife (name unknown; Thomas was the son of John Strange of Massingham; see Strange). Queen Elizabeth re-created the de la Warr title, so he is known as the first Baron de la Warr of the second creation. He died in December 1595 at Wherwell in Northamptonshire. He and Elizabeth had four children: Thomas, the heir; Elizabeth, married Richard Blount; Jane, married Sir Thomas Wenman, James Cressus, Thomas Tasburgh, and Sir Ralph Shelton; and Mary, married her sister's widower Richard Blount. Elizabeth Strange died sometime in the 1560s, and William married Anne Swift. As a widow she was married again,to Thomas Oliver. Father of George, Thomas West 8th baron of Delaware, married to Elizabeth Copely. Eleanor Copley d. bt 10 May 1536 - 14 Nov 1536 Sir Thomas West, 8th Lord la Warre was born circa 1457.1 He was the son of Richard West, 7th Lord la Warre and Catherine Hungerford.1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Mortimer, daughter of Hugh Mortimer and Eleanor Cornwall. He married, secondly, Eleanor Copley, daughter of Sir Roger Copley.1 He died on 11 October 1525. Sir Thomas West, 8th Lord la Warre succeeded to the title of 5th Lord West [E., 1322] on 10 March 1475/76. He succeeded to the title of 8th Lord la Warre [E., 1299] on 10 March 1475/76. He was invested as a Knight on 18 January 1477/78. On 5 March 1485/86 he was granted the Sussex estates of the attainted Duke of Norfolk. In 1497 he helped quell the Cornish uprising in support of Perkin Warbeck. He was invested as a Knight Banneret on 18 August 1513. Father of Elizabeth, Sir Roger Copely married to Anne Hoo. Ann Hoo was born circa 1448. Sir Roger Copley lived at Roughway, Sussex, England. Father of Anne, Thomas Hoo 1st Baron Hoo, married to Eleanor de Welles. Thomas Hoo, 1st Lord Hoo was the son of Sir Thomas Hoo and Eleanor de Felton. He married, firstly, Elizabeth Wychingham, daughter of Nicholas Wychingham. He married, secondly, Elizabeth de Welles, daughter of Lionel de Welles, Lord de Welles.3 He died on 13 February 1455. Thomas Hoo, 1st Lord Hoo was created 1st Lord Hoo, of Hoo in the county of Bedford and of Hastings in the county of Sussex [England] on 2 June 1448. Father of Eleanor, Lionel de Welles, 6th Baron Welles, married to Joan Waterton. Sir Lionel de Welles was born in 1406.2 He was the son of Eudes de Welles and Maud de Greystoke. He married, firstly, Joan de Waterton, daughter of Sir Robert de Waterton, on 15 August 1417 at St. Oswald's Church, Methely, Yorkshire, England. He married, secondly, Margaret Beauchamp, daughter of John Beauchamp and Edith Stourton, circa April 1447.1 He died on 29 March 1461 at Towton, Yorkshire, England, killed in action. Sir Lionel de Welles gained the title of 6th Lord Welles. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) on 25 February 1431. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.). He fought in the Battle of Towton on 29 March 1461 Father of Lionel, Eudo(Eudes) de Welles married to Maude (Maud de) Greystock (Greystoke) daughter of Ralph de Greystoke, 3rd Lord Greystoke and Katherine de Clifford. He died before 26 August 1421.1 Father of Eudo (Eudes), John de Welles,5th Baron Welles, married to Eleanor (Alianor) Mowbray Eleanor (Alianor) de Mowbray was born before 25 March 1364. Father of Eleanor (Alianor), John Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray, married to Elizabeth de Segrave. John Mowbray, 4th Lord Mowbray was born on 24 June 1340 at Epworth, Lincolnshire, England. He died in 1368 at Constantinople, Turkey. Elizabeth de Segrave was born on 25 October 1338 at Croxton Abbey, Leicestershire, England. Father of Elizabeth, John de Segrave, 4th Baron of Segrave, married to Margaret Plantagent, Duchess of Norfolk. John de Segrave, 4th Baron of Segrave was born between 1306 and 1315. He died on 1 April 1353. Margaret Marshall Plantagenet, Duchess of Norfolk was born circa 1321 and was the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton,(Earl of Norfolk and younger brother of King Edward II), by his first wife Alice Hayles(daughter of Sir Roger Hayles and Alice Skogan). Thomas of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk was born on 1 June 1300 at Brotherton, Yorkshire, North Riding, England. He was the son of Edward I 'Longshanks', King of England and Marguerite de France. Thomas of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk was a member of the House of Plantagenet. He gained the title of Earl of Norfolk on 16 December 1312. He gained the title of 1st Earl Marshall of England.
